Zip Line Hero: Care Home Staff Member Raises £820 for Rare Neurological Disorder

Last week, the Velocity zip line at Zip World in Snowdonia saw an incredible display of bravery as it flew Claire Hilton through the skies at over 100mph to raise money for a rare neurological disorder.

Claire Hilton, Business Administration Manager at Virginia Water Care Home, conquered Europe’s fastest and longest zip line, twice, overcoming her fear to ensure a memorable challenge.

Despite battling nerves and the challenging weather of heavy rain, Claire described the experience as “absolutely amazing.”

Claire’s incredible effort has raised £820 for the PSP Association (PSPA), a UK charity dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a rare neurological disorder.

Claire’s fundraising efforts were deeply personal, fuelled by her mother, Eve Hilton’s, battle with PSP, a condition that severely affects movement and coordination.

Just a year ago, Claire celebrated Eve’s 80th birthday. Now, Eve is severely ill, having suffered three strokes and being looked after by two carers four times a day.

PSP is a condition that affects approximately 4,000 individuals in the UK, a number that may be higher due to misdiagnosis, particularly among those over 60.

The emotional impact of the challenge was profound. Eve, who tragically cannot speak due to the severity of her condition, was brought to tears as she watched the video of Claire’s zip line adventure.

Claire expressed profound gratitude, saying, “Thank you to everyone for your unwavering support. The challenge was daunting but knowing it would help fight this devastating condition was worth every moment.”

“I’m thrilled to have completed it and hope to reach my fundraising target of £1,000 soon.”

Virginia Water Care Home, part of the Avery Healthcare Group, has been strongly supporting Claire’s fundraising efforts.

Ewa Jaworska, Home Manager, praised Claire’s determination: “Claire’s dedication and bravery are truly inspiring. We encourage everyone to contribute to her fundraising campaign to help find a cure for PSP and CBD.”
