‘100 years young!’, Edwin Celebrates Milestone in Style
Aran Court Care Home, in Tile Cross, Birmingham, celebrated a special birthday for resident Edwin Connington, who recently turned 100. During the course of the week, Edwin had many wonderful celebrations to enjoy, including a birthday party with friends at Aran Court and a feature on BBC news.
Current restrictions meant that Edwin was not able to celebrate with his family as he usually would. Still, the excellent staff at Aran Court made sure he was well looked after and had plenty of festivities to enjoy in the comfort of the home. Days before, residents at Aran Court, and friends of Edwin spent time preparing cards and gifts for him to enjoy on his special day.
Alongside his feature in the media, part of BBC Radio WM’s ‘Make a Difference’ campaign, Edwin’s birthday was shared on the station’s show last week, which prompted listeners to call in and send their birthday wishes to Edwin. By Wednesday, he had received over one thousand messages from listeners all over the country. Edwin also received a surprise visit from the West Midlands Fire Service, who personally dropped off a card to him.
Edwin admits it took him two days to open all 632 birthday cards he received – including one from the Queen! He was overwhelmed with the number of people who wished him well on his birthday; saying: “In this troubled world, it has given me so much happiness to know that there are so many good people.”
