RBL Cookbook Winners: When I Were A Kid
In honour of the Royal British Legion’s centenary this year, and in line with the release of their veteran cookbook – ‘Cooking with Heroes: The Royal British Legion Centenary Cookbook’, Avery held a competition whereby residents were invited to share their favourite childhood food memories.
Residents Margaret Smith, Colin Malpass, and Betty Wetherell from Hempstalls Hall Care Home in Newcastle-under-Lyme, joined together to create a wonderful poem. The poem is inspired by memories of food rations when they were children and how they still got fed even though food was in short demand. They would also remember the excitement of a neighbour or family member calling by with a treat like a piece of chocolate or cake.
Watch the group proudly perform their poem below:
When I were a kid
By
Margaret, Colin, and Betty
When I were a kid
I’d ask my mum, “What’s to eat”
She would say,
“There’s not much today”
She would do her best to fill the plate
Then we’d excitedly wait, for someone,
anyone to call with a treat at the garden gate
