RBL Cookbook Winner: Vaughn’s Secret Sausage Sandwiches
In honour of the Royal British Legion’s centenary this year, and in line with the release of their veteran cookbook – ‘Cooking with Heroes: The Royal British Legion Centenary Cookbook’, Avery held a competition whereby residents were invited to share their favourite childhood food memories. Vaughn Jones, at Lavender Lodge Care Home, reveals his love of sausages, and how they were his favourite treat growing up.
He said, “When I was growing up in Feltham, completing my apprenticeship, often I used to climb on my bike and cycle to the local café – John’s – where they would ensure there was always an extra sausage sandwich prepared just for me. During the war, sausages were an absolute luxury, and rather expensive, so I was delighted that they would always save one for me.”
