Local Care Home Residents Lead 10-Mile Walk for Alzheimer’s Society

Two residents at a local care home have successfully organised and completed a 10-mile London Bridges Walk, raising vital funds and awareness for dementia care.

With a combined age of 168, Eric Heather and Jill Todd, both residents of Chorleywood Manor Care Home in Rickmansworth, led the initiative with enthusiastic support from staff and fellow residents.

The best friends, both originally from London, have lived at Chorleywood Manor Care Home for five years.

Jill remarked, “We witness the dedication of the staff here every day, caring for residents with dementia. There’s an entire memory care floor at the care home which provides specialist care for residents with dementia, and we just wanted to do our part to help.”

The walk was an inclusive fundraising event, bringing together people of all abilities in aid of Alzheimer’s Society.

Approximately 900,000 people in the UK are living with dementia, with Alzheimer’s disease being the most common form.

Dementia is the leading cause of death in the UK for both men and women, yet only 51% of the public recognise it as a fatal condition.

Participants enjoyed iconic London sights, including the London Eye, Houses of Parliament, and Tower Bridge, during the five-hour walk. So far, over £3,000 has been raised, with donations still coming in.

The funds raised will contribute to the Alzheimer’s Society’s work, including ground-breaking research and vital support for people living with dementia and their families.

The Alzheimer’s Society is crucial in funding innovative research into treatments and cures, as well as providing direct support services to those affected by the condition.

After completing the walk, Eric and Jill celebrated with a well-earned pint at The Founders Arms, reflecting on the day’s success.

Eric said, “It was an incredible day doing something amazing for charity. I am so happy for all the support from Jill and the Chorleywood Manor Care Home team who made this possible.”

A Carer at Chorleywood Manor said, “To have Eric and Jill lead us on this amazing challenge was great. It meant the world having them with us and to raise money for such a vital cause.”

Chorleywood Manor Care Home, part of Avery Healthcare, provides high-quality respire, residential and dementia care.
