“It’s been a long time since I attended a football match.”
Last week, Barnet Grange Care Home residents scored big by attending a match featuring Wingate & Finchley FC, one of the oldest clubs in the country.
Brian Lewis, 85, Terry Murphy, 86, and Alan Cox, 84, who are all residents at the luxury care home in Barnet, attended the match featuring their local sports team.
The trio were treated to complimentary refreshments and had the opportunity to meet centre back, Toby Byron, defender Ayo Tanimowo, and left-side defender Michael O’Donoghue, who kindly presented them with exclusive T-shirts, further enhancing their overall experience.
Terry Murphy, a former Arsenal scout for 25 years, played a significant role in developing players such as Martin Keown and the late David Rocastle, who had successful careers with Arsenal and England.
Wingate & Finchley FC, one of the oldest clubs in the country, founded in 1874, was formed through a merger with Wingate Football Club in 1991. Since then, the club has achieved significant success, including playoff appearances and a strong focus on youth development.
Alan Cox remarked, “It’s been a long time since I attended a football match, and I loved it. The atmosphere, the excitement, the crowd, it was wonderful. I can’t wait to do this again.”
The event, part of a sponsorship between Barnet Grange Care Home and Wingate & Finchley FC, offered residents a chance to engage with athletes, enjoy live football, and be part of a vibrant community, promoting an active and social lifestyle among the elderly.
Corrina Nestor, Activities Assistant at Barnet Grange Care Home, also attended the game. Corrina said, “It was exciting to see our residents cheering and getting into the match day spirit, especially when Wingate FC scored a last-minute equaliser. It was a fun day had by all, and our residents can’t wait to watch another game.”
