Giffords Circus Brings Joy to Sonning Gardens
Sonning Gardens Care Home was filled with joy and excitement as it welcomed Giffords Circus last week, offering a memorable entertainment experience for residents, including 101-year-old Edna Wall, a former acrobat.
The event featured The Godfathers, an acclaimed Ukrainian acrobatic troupe known for their unique combination of talents, including a live band, a charismatic jester, and exceptional hula hoop artistry.
The vibrant and traditional circus evoked deep nostalgia for Edna, a resident of Sonning Gardens Care Home since 2021.
In 1937, at the age of 14, Edna joined the Kremlin Four, an acrobatic troupe that toured the UK before World War II.
Even into her 80s, she impressed her great-nieces and nephews with her agility by performing cartwheels and headstands.
Now at 101-years-old, Edna, originally from Greenford in Middlesex, found the Giffords Circus visit particularly meaningful.
Edna remarked, “I never thought I’d see a circus again, let alone have one come to me! It brings back so many wonderful memories.”
“I had a marvellous day; it really took me back to the days when I was performing similar activities and stunts.”
Home Manager of Sonning Gardens Care Home, Susan Johnstone, noted the significance of organising such events for residents. “This performance provides our residents with an enjoyable experience and a chance to connect with one another,” she stated. “We strive to create opportunities that enhance the daily lives of our residents.”
