Enriching Lives Through Music
Albion Court Care Home in Birmingham has been working in close partnership with Nordoff Robbins to provide therapy dedicated to transforming the lives of residents, particularly those living with dementia. Therapist Andy Rimmer visits the home weekly to provide group and 1-1 sessions where he will sing residents’ favourite songs of past and present, and play various instruments that help residents connect which can help reduce the distressing symptoms of dementia, such as agitation and anxiety.
Music can support emotional and psychological health and therefore improve well-being. An excellent example of the effectiveness of music therapy is resident, Rita. She walks with purpose continually throughout the day and chatters nonstop. Due to her advanced dementia, it can be difficult for her to engage in activities, yet when Andy visits, she will sit calmly strumming the guitar with him and sing along for quite a time.
