Senior Carer Takes on 26.3-Mile Challenge for Alzheimer’s Society
Kerry Houghton, Senior Carer at Rowan Court Care Home, will walk 26.3 miles on Saturday 10th August in the challenging Trek26 Peak District event to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society.
This event, known for its rugged terrain and stunning views, is a popular annual trek that attracts participants from all over the UK. With an elevation gain of over 1200 meters, Kerry has trained intensively since March of this year to prepare for the challenge.
This trek is not just a physical challenge for Kerry, but a deeply personal mission. It follows a previous 50km walk she completed in honour of a former colleague and family members who have suffered from a neurological disease.
Now working at Rowan Court Care Home in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Kerry is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Society through this event.
The funds will support vital research and care for Alzheimer’s patients, including funding innovative research projects, support services for those with dementia, and campaigns to raise awareness and influence change.
According to the Alzheimer’s Society, around 900,000 people in the UK currently have dementia, with the number expected to exceed one million by 2025. Kerry set her original fundraising goal at £500 but has almost reached her target in less than three months.
Kerry has been overwhelmed by the support she has received from both her workplace and the wider community. She expressed her deep appreciation, saying, “I am truly grateful for everyone’s support. Your compassion and generosity have made a significant difference in my life. Knowing that I am surrounded by such a supportive network means the world to me, and I can’t thank you enough for the strength and comfort you’ve given me through your actions and words.”
