From Coffee to Care – Our Journey

Lorna and Derek have been married for 60 years. Their love story began at a coffee bar in Hastings, and they spent their first date strolling along the seafront. They married on 20th April 1963 and spent their honeymoon at the Norfolk Broads on a boating holiday.

Over the years, they have created a lifetime of special memories, including attending many regattas in the summer months, sharing their love for travel, and enjoying holidays in the Middle East, Canada, and the USA. Together, they raised two wonderful sons, one of whom lives in Canada.

When asked for their secret to a long and happy marriage, Lorna said, “Having independence and freedom to pursue separate interests in life.” Derek had a career as an electrical engineer, and Lorna was a telephonist operator in the 1950s.

Their care journey began after Derek suffered a bad fall, so in March 2020, they moved into the Hawthorns Eastbourne retirement community. Not long after, Derek developed Parkinson’s, and they realised that with Derek’s care requirements progressing, they would need another solution. Lorna sought a solution that meant she and Derek could remain together, leading them to Eastbourne Gardens Care Home

Their decision to move into a care facility has meant they can continue enjoying life’s pleasures, allowing for shared meals, entertainment, and activities. Life at Eastbourne Gardens has supported them in caring for Derek’s needs and, most of all, peace of mind for their children who don’t live nearby. It is heartwarming to see couples such as Lorna and Derek continuing their journey in life together, receiving the care they need, and continuing to create new memories.
